Overview of Food Retailing in India

Food Retailing is an important part of the retail sector in India. In 2001, the Indian food retail market sale rose by 63% during 2001 over its preceding year. The food retail sales grew from ` 381,000 crore in the year 1996 to ` 703,900 crore in 2001. As per estimates of 2003, the size of organized retail business in India was around ` 18000 crore and it constituted around 1.6% of the cumulative retail sales in India.

The organized food retailing industry offers tremendous scope and needs liberal government policies to flourish in India. The scope of investments is also huge in this sector. A drawback for this industry is the long gestation period. Majority of Indian consumers are still inclined towards small time food retailers, for ready-to-eat food products and groceries.

The trend in urban and semi-urban India is changing and food retailing is registering decent growth. The food retailing industry in India retails packed foods and fresh foods. The food items sold by the organized food retailing markets in India include fresh vegetables and fruits, canned vegetables and fruits, fish, meat, eggs, processed foods, milk and milk products, ready-to-eat foods, snacks, beverages, etc.
