McDonald's was first opened in India in 1996 and it has grown to become one of the leading fast food chains in the country. In Northern India, Vikram Bakshi's company Connaught Plaza Restaurants Private Limited owns and manages the restaurants of McDonald's. In Western India, the restaurants of McDonald's are owned and managed by the company of Amit Jatia that is Hardcastle Restaurants Private Limited.

By 2007, McDonald's had more than 120 outlets in India. In India, more than three lakh customers visit the restaurants of McDonald's each day.McDonald's has successfully developed its brand identity in India among its partners, customers and also employees.

It has developed a special menu for India by keeping in mind the preferences and tastes of the people of the country. The menu of McDonald's in India has vegetarian and non-vegetarian selections with domestic flavor so that they appeal to the tastes of the Indian people. It does not offer any items of pork or beef in the country.

McDonald's provides the facility of home delivery for the convenience of its customers. It opened the first drive-in restaurant in India at Noida, in 1997. McDonald's, in India, has established a benchmark in the sector of quick service restaurant and this is the reason that it has been awarded many awards like the "Most Respected Company" for four successive years from 2003 to 2007 by Business World in the sector of Food Services. McDonald's has also been awarded the "Most Wanted Brand" by Franchising Holdings India Ltd., for 2003 and 2004.
