iPod was launched on October 23, 2001. It is designed and marketed by Apple Inc. This popular brand of portable media players comes in various models like iPod Classic iPod Touch, iPod Nano, iPod Shuffle and the iPhone. Earlier products of an iPod are iPod Mini and iPod Photo.

iPod found its origin from Apple's "digital hub" category. Its name was given by Vinnie Chieco, a freelance copywriter. The software of an iPod includes audio formats like MP3, AAC/M4A, WAV, Audible audiobook, Protected AAC, AIFF and Apple Lossless. An iPod needs to be connected to one host computer during its installation. The iTunes synchronizes the music libraries both automatically or manually. Song ratings can also be set on an iPod.

One can also store or transfers files from an iPod. The media files are stored on an iPod in a hidden folder. There is also an equalizer that amplifies the digital audio level beyond the software's limit. Other features of an iPod are its hardware and connectivity that includes two iPod wall chargers, with FireWire (left) and USB (right) connectors. The iPod dock connector was introduced in the third-generation iPod.

Besides the above mentioned features an iPod comes with many additional accessories like sound recorders, audio/visual cables for TV connections, FM radio tuners, wired remote controls, Nike+iPod pedometer, Camera Connector, protective cases/films, external speakers, wireless remote controls and wireless earphones.

Another important feature of an iPod is its battery. The battery life for different models varies from one to another. These batteries can not be removed or replaced by the user. The first battery replacement program was announced by Apple on November 14, 2003.

Today, after winning several awards, iPod is the fourth best computer product of 2006. It is now popular as a business device. Students also use iPods in their education. Because of this rising popularity of iPod, personal computer maker Dell is coming up with a digital music player this September (2008).
