Pharma/Biotech Industry of India is one of the expanding industries and is vital to India's financial system. During 2004 to 2008, the industry registered a CAGR of 12.9% making it third largest in the world both in contexts of productivity and profitability. At present the Indian Pharmaceutical/Biotech industry is worth more than USD20 billion.

The industry will witness a CAGR of 18% in exports in the year 2011-12, as per an industry research organization RNCOS. The development will be triggered by billion dollar copyright cessations and expansion in overseas generic productivity. Moreover, the pharma/biotech industry will supersede its international counterparts by expanding at a yearly rate of 13-15% during FYs 2008- 2013.

The growth in Pharma/Biotech industry will be further fueled by socio-economic aspects such as increase in the per capital income, spending competence of the individuals, steady incursion and awareness of health insurance among people and the increase in chronic ailments. The period between 2008 to13 will register a growth of 12.2% with pharmaceutical/biotech market reaching USD13.7 billion.

While Budget 2009 failed to provide benefits to the pharmabiotech industry, 2010 budget Pharma/Biotech Industry expectations range from more tax holidays in imports of raw materials to equation of import tariffs and allocation of more incentives. The implementation of such measures would indirectly benefit innumerable patients in India who are experiencing kidney diseases, diabetes, asthma, heart ailments, cancer, etc.
