CESC or Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation is the company providing electricity services to the Indian city of Kolkata and its urban hinterlands. CESC supplies electrical power to all the power needing entities within the Kolkata municipal area. The company is part of the RPG Group.

Generating Capacities

CESC of Kolkata has a total electric energy generating capacity of 975 MW. This total capacity is distributed between four Generating stations.

Three Generating stations- Southern, Titagarh, and Budge Budge employs Pulverized Fuel (PF) while the New Cossipore Generating station is older and uses non Pulverized Fuel to generate electricity. All CESC electrical Generating stations employ Thermal processes. The Budge power Generating station has the highest installed capacity of 500 MW.

Engineering Marvel

The total distribution area under CESC encompass 567 square kilometers. The RPG Group company is the exclusive electrical power provider to Kolkata and Howrah municipalities. Total integration of the distribution network is made possible by a tunnel under the Hooghly river. The tunnel is constructed 90 feet below the ground and has a diameter of 6 feet. The total length of the tunnel is 690 yards. The tunnel transfers bulk power from West Bengal State Electricity Board (WBSEB) to CESC.

Company History

CESC started as Kilburn & Co when the company acquired the license to provide electricity to Calcutta city on January 7, 1897. Kilburn & Co changed its name to The Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation a month later. The list of first customers included the Bank of Bengal (presently State Bank of India) and other high end Chowringhee addresses. Calcutta Tramways used electrical energy to power its rakes from 1902. Previously horse drawn carriages were used. CESC moved into its present Victoria House headquarters in 1933.
