Tata Power Company, founded by Jamshedji Tata in the year 1868 is India's leading private sector electricity generating company with a capacity of 2300 MW. The headquarters of Tata Power are established in Mumbai, India.

Tata Power Company (TPC) sponsored India's first hydro-electric project in 1915. TATAPOWER has conglomerated hydel and thermal with an objective to charge lower tariff from clients since the varying cost of producing Hydel power is only a small fraction of the value of Thermal. The main services rendered by Tata Power Company are generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity.

Tata Power Company Ltd. also handled a Bangladesh project in the year 2003 of a cost of USD 8.9 million. The two sub-projects under it that contributed in distributing electricity from plants of Power Grid Corporation of Bangladesh to their substations.

Tata Power Trading Company Ltd. (TPTCL) is a closely-held subordinate of Tata Power Company Ltd. and has undertaken the inter-state merchandising of power in India. TPTCL has been honored as the first power trading license by the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) under section 14 of the Electricity Act 2003, permitting it to execute transactions across India. The company has carried out projects involving power plant and utility operations and management in places such as Saudi Arabia, Liberia, Iran, Sierra Leone and Algeria. Very recently, Tata Power is known to have planned out an investment policy of ` 62 billion for the coming 5 years.

Financial Rise for 2006-2007:
  • ` 1, 218.5 million (June 2006) to ` 1902 million (June 2007) – 56.09% rise in net profit
  • ` 13,766.1 million (June 2006) to ` 15,114.8 million (June 2007) – 9.8% rise in net sales
  • ` 14,175.7 million (June 2006) to ` 15,799.4 million (June 2007) – 11.45% rise in total income
  • The earnings per share of TPC stood at ` 9.6 for the quarter ended June 2007
The latest contract taken up by Tata Power Company is establishing a 4000 MW power plant at Mundra which is claimed to be India's first power plant project that has been set up at one go whereas other projects mostly involved stage construction. Apart from India and the above mentioned overseas countries, TPC has also handled numerous other foreign projects in the Middle East, Africa, and South-East Asia. Tata Power has also signed a 51:49 joint venture with Power Grid Corporation of India for the 1200 km Tala Transmission Project which is India's first transmission project under private or public partnership.
