United spirits was previously known as McDowell Company Limited and Herbertsons Limited. Presently, it is one of the major parts of the United Breweries Group, led by the charismatic and dynamic Mr. Vijay Mallya.

The United spirits is one of the leaders in the consumable spirits trade globally. It is the 3rd biggest marketer of spirits in the international arena with total yearly sales of nearly 60 millions cases. The innovations pertaining to the packaging such as the use of German made damage-proof tear-away caps, holograms, and guala caps (non-refillable) have made it possible for the United Spirits to hold a prestigious and special place in the United Breweries Group.

United Spirits has also become one of the major commercial media pertaining to the Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) brands of the UB Group. Some of the major brands of United Spirits are Honeybee brandy, Bagpiper whiskey, McDowell's No.1 whiskey, McDowell's No.1 Celebration rum, McDowell's No.1 brandy, and John Exshaw Brandy. All these heavily selling brands of the United Spirits are termed the 'Millionaire' brands as a part of the promotion campaign.
