Community and Rural Development Govt. of Meghalaya

The Community and Rural Development, Govt. of Meghalaya, came into existence in the year 1932 with the aim to provide self-help options to the rural population of the state. It was mainly developed to increase the economic, social, and cultural aspects of the state.

The community and rural development program in Meghalaya was chiefly focused upon implementing self-help groups in the rural sector of the state in order to make the rural poor not only self-reliant but also to develop the community feeling among the youths of the state. The community and rural development programme under the Govt. of Meghalaya also instigates interest within the rural poor to take part in both the planning and carrying out of the development tasks designed to improve their own socio-economic conditions.

This program has been formulated with the aim to make the people self-dependent and confident enough to manage their own issues and problems. This ensures the growth of a range of self-governing sectors in the rural regions of the state. It aims at providing employment and sustainable livelihood at every corner of the rural region and also promises the rural inhabitants a more secured life.

Agriculture is the main occupation and source of living of the rural sector of the state. Apart from modifying the agricultural sector, the Community and Rural Development, Govt. of Meghalaya takes care of a range of other activities as well. Some of the welfare programs taken up by the community and rural development in Meghalaya are as follows:
  • Planning for better communication facilities in terms of farm animals and birds
  • Ensuring hygiene in health and sanitation sector in the rural corners of the state
  • Providing better infrastructure and housing facilities in the rural sectors
  • Assuring literacy among the rural youths to make them competent for the employment options and to set up educational institutions for the same purpose
  • Taking measures for the welfare of women and children
  • Developing the small scale as well as the cottage industries to improve the industrial sector
