Cipla



Ciplawas founded by Khwaja Abdul Hamied in 1935 and was known as The Chemical, Industrial and Pharmaceutical Laboratories, though it is better known by the acronym Cipla today. Cipla was registered in August, 1935 as a public limited enterprise and it began with an authorized capital of Rs. 6 lakh. Today, the company is one of the leading Indian pharmaceutical companies.

Though set up in 1935, it was only in 1937 that Cipla began manufacturing and marketing its pharmaceutical products. Today, the company has its facilities spread across several locations across India such as Mumbai, Goa, Patalganga, Kurkumbh, Bangalore, and Vikhroli. Cipla commands an important position in the Indian pharmaceutical industry by dint of its pioneering efforts in manufacturing cost-effective drugs for patients infected with HIV-AIDS.
Cipla’s product portfolio:
The following is a brief outline of the several categories under which Cipla manufactures its products:
Prescription Drugs
As a part of prescription drugs, Cipla manufactures scores of products such as anti-viral drugs, appetite stimulants, anti-spasmodics, laxatives, vertigo medicines, sedatives, pregnancy testing kits, hypnotics, respiratory devices, anti-inflammatory drugs, anti-allergic drugs, anti-TB drugs, anti-acne drugs, analgesics, anesthetic agents, anti-obesity drugs, diuretics, nasal preparations, skeletal muscle relaxant, immuno-suppressants, gout preparations, topical preparations, iron chelators, multihalers, benign prostatic hyperplasia drugs, hormone replacement therapy drugs, cardiovascular agents and cerebral vasodialators.
Bulk Drugs
Cipla manufactures 2 types of bulk drugs: active pharmaceutical agents and drug intermediates. The various types of active pharmaceutical agents produced by Cipla include arthritic and rheumatic agents, CNS drugs, gastrointestinal drugs, anti-malarial drugs, urology drugs, ophthalmic drugs, cardiovascular drugs, osteoporosis drugs, and anti-histamines. Cipla is renowned for manufacturing hundreds of drug intermediates. Some of the well-known ones are Alprazolam, Anastrazole, Carvedilol, Danazol, Dutasteride, Etoposide, Entacapone, Felodipine, Flutamide, Nevirapine, Omeprazol, Topiramate, Zidovudine, and Zolpidem.
Over-the-counter (OTC) Drugs
Cipla manufactures scores of OTC medicines that cater to categories such as child care, health drinks, eye care, cough and cold, hair care, foot care, oral hygiene, skin care, pain care, indigestion, and lifestyle management. Cipla also manufactures several medicines that are vitamin and mineral supplements.
Technology Services
Cipla has an enormous reputation in the pharmaceutical market for the range of technology services that it offers. Cipla offers services like consulting, commissioning, engineering, project appraisal, quality control, know-how transfer, support, and plant supply.

Apart from its strong presence in the Indian market, Cipla also has an extensive export market and regularly exports to more than 150 countries in regions such as North America, South American, Asia, Europe, Middle East, Australia, and Africa. For the year ended 31st March, 2007 Cipla’s exports were worth approximately Rs. 17,500 million. Cipla is also considerably well-known for its technological innovation and processes for which the company received know-how loyalties to the tune of Rs. 750 million during 2006-07. For its impressive track record and state-of-the-art equipments at its various manufacturing facilities, Cipla has been approved by regulatory bodies such as:

Cipla has recently launched i-Pill which is a single dose emergency contraceptive and has acquired a great deal of popularity in a short span of time. Other latest launches of Cipla include products such as Nova, Moxicip, Flomex, Fullform, Montair LC, and Imicrit. These products are expected to do well in the Indian markets in the near future.
