Bharat Refractories Limited (BRL) was originally incorporated in 1974 as a subsidiary of the company Bokaro Steel Limited. The Company Bharat Refractories is a Public Sector Undertaking which became independent under the Indian government's Ministry of Steel & Mines in 1978.
The Company Bharat Refractories manufactures refractories that are consumed by the various steel plants all over the country. The company has its head office in Bokaro Steel City and it has site offices in various cities such as Delhi, Kolkata, Jamshedpur, Visakhapatnam, Durgapur, and Rourkela. Bharat Refractories Company has 4 manufacturing units that are IFICO Refractories plant with the production capacity of 42,000 M.T., Ranchi Road Refractories plant with the manufacturing capacity of around 7,500 M.T., Bhandaridah Refractories plant with the production capacity 26,000 M.T., and Bhilai Refractories plant with the manufacturing capacity 60,000 M.T. Thus the total production capacity of Bharat Refractories Limited is around 1,35,000 M.T.
Bharat Refractories Company's manufacturing facilities are highly technologically advanced. Also the company uses the best quality of raw material for the production of its products. This is the reason that the Company Bharat Refractories has received the ISO 9002 certification. In order to further improve the quality of its products, the company entered into technical collaborations with Kawasaki Refractories Company of Japan, Shinagawa Refractories Ltd of Japan, and Research & Development Center for Iron & Steel (RDCIS) in Ranchi.

The company's R&D center has developed some products such as Tap Hole Mass, Blast Furnace, Zero Cement Castable, and Blast Furnace.
