The Shipping Corporation of India was set up in the year 1961, out of a collaboration between the Western and the Eastern Shipping Corporation. The company has developed over the years to start break-bulk facility, offshore operations, transport of passengers, dry bulk operations and so on.

The company has extended its scope to supervise and service the water crafts owned by the Indian Government. The company has been recently honored with Mini Ratna title that has authorized it to take crucial decisions regarding capital investment and enter into joint ventures. The Shipping Corporation of India has also embarked into energy transit and is therefore concerned with the sunrise division within LNG transportation.

The Shipping Corporation of India was recognized with the Star Performers' Award which was presented by M/S. Freightliner, U.K. in association with Lloyds London Press, U.K. In the year 1999, on account of the excellent quality container service provided by The Shipping Corporation of India between India and U.K. ONGCL presented The Shipping Corporation of India with the letter of appreciation for mending their pipeline called Hira Uran trunk, that was partly destroyed due to the uneven circumstances created in 1996 cyclone. The Shipping Corporation of India has been awarded with Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue for the rescue operations carried on by approximately 19 water crafts of the company. These water crafts have been awarded in the form of Blue Pennant, Gold Pennant, Purple Pennant as well as Certificate of Merit. Some of the prominent water crafts that received the award are:

Collaborations of The Shipping Corporation of India:

The collaboration of the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines and The Shipping Corporation of India led to the formation of Irano Hind Shipping Company in the year 1975. Irano Hind Shipping Company has grown immensely and currently possesses 8 watter crafts. The Shipping Corporation of India has joined hands with K Line, Mitsui OSK Lines and NYK Line to supply LNG at the rate of 5 million metric tonnes on an yearly basis to the project implemented by Petronet LNG at Dahej.

Management of The Shipping Corporation of India:

The Shipping Corporation of India is managed by an efficient and experienced team of directors, that includes both full time and part time directors and some nominated members of the Indian government. The Shipping Corporation of India is headed by Shri S. Hajara who is functioning as the Chairman as well as the Managing director of the company. The Shipping Corporation of India has appointed three full time directors including Mr. U.C. Grover, Shri Kailash Gupta and B.K. Mandal. The Central government has nominated Shri Rajeev Gupta and Shri C,.Balakrishanan to function as part time directors of the company whereas Shri Dholakia, Shri U. Sunderarajan, Shri A.K.Mago, Shri J.N.L. Srivastava, Keshav Saran and Shri A.D. Fernando function as non official as well as part time directors of The Shipping Corporation of India.
