CyberMedia Research states that in 2012 the Indian market for personal computers, including laptops, will see a significant growth of 8 percent. This will be more than 2011 when a growth rate of 6 percent was achieved.
The shipments remained restricted to a select few thanks to the prices. But with prices expected to be rationalized, ultrabooks will get a lot of prominence by 2012. However, the future does not look so bright for the mini laptops.

India laptop industry news
Sony India has recently announced its plans to market 6.5 lakh laptops of the Vaio brand in 2012-13. The electronics company from Japan is supposed to put in INR 90 crore and initiate a fresh marketing program for the brand with Kareena Kapoor, its brand ambassador.
Sony India has also introduced the newest models of Vaio and is looking to increase its network of distribution with the addition of 500 new stores, which will take the total number of Sony India stores to 4500.
Sony is presently the top name in the segment for consumer notebooks in India. According to IDC statistics, in the third quarter of the 2011-12 fiscal its market share was estimated at 20 percent. Vaio laptops have a 100 percent growth rate as opposed to the entire laptop industry, which averages 25 percent.
Sachin Thapar, the head of Sony India’s IT and Mobiles division, has stated that Vaio’s contribution is set to increase to 25 percent from 20 percent as far as the aggregate sales of Sony India in 2012-13 are concerned.
Sony Vaio is also supposed to introduce 15 exclusive brand stores of Vaio in 2012, which will make the total number 50. Its onsite services for laptops are also supposed to have started during July 2012.
ACi, a UK based laptop brand, has introduced the cheapest and completely operational laptop in India. ACi Icon 1100 is worth INR 4999 and 10.2 inch screen as well as high resolution. The company’s Indian representatives are Allied Computers International (Asia) Ltd.
Hirji Patel, the chairman of Allied Computers International (Asia) Ltd., has stated that the laptop is compatible with Windows and has an expandable memory with an upper limit of 1 GB. The company has also introduced 6 other mid to high end laptops. He estimates that the company will be able to sell 2 lakh ACi laptops every year. The company will also look to add approximately 500 dealerships to its existing base by July 2012.
