The Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department plays a predominant role in the overall planning of the Jammu and Kashmir tourism initiatives. The Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department is constantly focused on improving the tourism infrastructure and making Jammu and Kashmir Tourism a wonderful experience for tourists.

Jammu and Kashmir is located at the northern most tip of India and covers an area of 22,22,236 sq.km. There are 3 ways in which Jammu and Kashmir can be reached:

  • Flight - Airports are located at Srinagar, Leh, and Jammu – all three provide private airlines services but are also covered under Indian (Airlines) services.

  • Road - Bus stops are at the two capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar. The only route that connects various places of the country to Jammu and Kashmir is the National Highway 1-A.

  • Train - Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai are all connected to Jammu and Kashmir by trains like Himgiri Express, Swaraj Express, Shalimar Express, and Andaman Express.

Some of the popular places to visit in Jammu and Kashmir are Kargil, Poonch, Muzaffarabad, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Leh, Jammu, and Srinagar.

Jammu and Kashmir is geographically divided into 4 landscapes. They are - the famous Shivalik ranges, river Indus, high mountains, and higher plains. The climate is very cold for most part of the year. One can experience all 4 seasons – autumn, spring, winter, and summer, in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

The most popular items that are typical to Jammu and Kashmir are carpets, shawls, silks, tweeks, namdas, pherans chain stitch, crewel furnishings, basketry, papier mache, walnut wood, silverware, copper, honey, walnuts, almonds, and saffron.

Kashmir was aptly called 'paradise on earth' by the Mughals. During winter, tourists enjoy themselves while pursuing various activities such as sledge riding, skiing, and tobogganing. During spring months, one can take immense pleasure in viewing the beautiful lakes, clear skies, and orchards full of honey.

In summer, the green trees, fields, and beautiful lakes add to the aesthetic beauty of the environment. The most comfortable time of the year, however, is the autumn season when the temperatures begin to drop below 23 degree Celsius. Needless to say, tourists throng Jammu and Kashmir during spring months. Close to 1 lakh tourists from India and abroad visit Jammu and Kashmir each year.
