Higher education in Russia for Indian students has not taken off as well as it could have. However, things seem all set to change now, with Russian universities emerging as popular educational destinations for Indian students.

For a large number of Indian students, Russia has emerged as an alternative educational destination for it offers world class education at affordable prices. Russian universities are especially known for courses in medicine, engineering, and aviation. Russian degrees are recognized globally and are also ranked by the UNESCO and WHO.

The Russian universities offer the most advanced and sophisticated standard of higher education in the world as each educational institute is well equipped and teaching methods are streamlined and regulated. The teacher student ratio stands at 1:7. These factors have recently provided a major boost to higher education in Russia for Indian students. Another feature that attracts Indian students to Russia is fewer qualifying exams. The eligibility criteria for admission to Russian medical colleges is 10+2 with Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and English and 50% marks in aggregate. The medical course is available in Russian as well as English medium. The duration of medical courses in Russian medium is seven years while for English medium it is six years. Students who are interested in engineering should have 40% aggregate in their 10+ 2.

In case of engineering, the Bachelor's course is lasts for four years and the Master's for five and a half years. Certain branches of engineering, such as chemical, electrical, computer, and mechanical are available in English in the engineering department. All other specializations are in the Russian medium only.

Admission to PG courses are easily available unlike in India and this is also a reason why higher education in Russia for Indian students is becoming popular. Russian higher education is easily affordable as well. The admission criteria includes a Bachelor's degree from a recognized university. Instructions are given both in Russian and in English Students have to go through a year of preparatory faculty in Russian even if the medium of instruction is English.

The fee structure ranges between $ 2,500-4000 for English medium and $ 1,500-2,500 for Russian medium but it depends to a large extend on the course selected, the university, and place of study. The fee includes study material, tuition, and hostel accommodation. In addition, a student needs $ 800-1000 for food and personal expenses in a year. But seen in comparison with developed countries such as America and United Kingdom, Russia is a cheaper option for Indian students. And this is a reason behind the sudden increase in higher education in Russia for Indian students. Some of the major universities in Russia are:

Although courses are also offered in English, it is compulsory for English medium students to know Russian while pursuing a degree in Russia so that there are no problems in communication. The academic year in all Russian institutes starts from September. There are two semesters: one from September to January and the other from February to June.

Russian university degrees are recognized in all countries which enables an Indian to continue education or take up job any where in the world. This is another major reason behind the rise in higher education in Russia for Indian students.
