Live Coverage of Railway Budget 2008

The Union Minister for Railways Lalu Prasad Yadav presented the Rail Budget in parliament for the fiscal 2008-09 today. In the budget, he focused new areas into the railway network without hiking passenger fares.

This is the fifth rail budget for both Lalu Prasad and the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government. The minister said that "There are many inaccessible remote areas still untouched by the railways after so many years on the plea that these are financially unviable. My government has a social obligation on this aspect".

The rail network in India runs more than 11,000 trains everyday. Railway is the only ministry in India, which runs a separate budget in the parliament.
