Indian Merchandise Exports to US is one of the most significant sectors of the conducive bilateral trade between United States and India. In October, 2002 Indian Merchandise Exports to US continued to grow very strongly, increasing by almost 37%, as compared to the previous year. This was in fact, the first year when US merchandise imports from India would increase total US merchandise imports by 1%.

Bilateral trade is a crucial component in the rapidly expanding relations between India and the US. The bilateral trade in merchandise goods has increased to US$ 32 billion in 2006 from US$ 5.6 billion in 1990, representing a 470% growth in 16 years. Indian Merchandise Exports to US were worth US$ 18.80 billion in 2005 and US exports of merchandise to India was US$ 8 billion in 2005. During January to May, 2007 Merchandise Exports from India to US increased by 12.21% to US$ 9.81 billion as compared to India's exports during the same period in 2006 (US$ 8.74 billion). On the basis of this extraordinary growth in Indian Merchandise Exports to US, Shri Kamal Nath, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, announced a target of Indian Merchandise Export to US, at US US$ 160 billion for this fiscal year 2007-08 and US$ 200 billion for 2008-09.

Among the merchandise products exported to US from India, the most important are:
  • Jewelry and metals -

    Cut and polished diamonds and other jewelry form a major part of Indian Merchandise Exports to US amounting to almost 30% of total exports to the US. Exports of these items grew from US$ 5.03 billion in 2005 to US$ 5.86 billion in 2006.

  • Woven and knit apparel -

    Textiles like woven and knit apparel exports to the US grew from US$ 5 billion in 2005 to US$ 5.38 billion in 2006.

  • Miscellaneous textile articles -

    India's textile exports to the US amount to around 25% of India's total exports to US. Linen is one the most important exports under this category.

  • Organic chemicals -

    Export of organic chemicals to the US grew from US$ 638 million in 2005 to US$ 880 million in 2006. In regard to export of organic chemicals, Indian exports to US amounts to 5% of total exports to US.

  • Machinery -

    Export of engineering goods and machinery including electrical machinery grew sharply from US$ 1.48 billion in 2005 to US$ 2.20 billion in 2006. In regard to export of electrical machinery, Indian exports to US amounts to 5.25% of total exports to US. Taps, valves, transmission shafts, gears, and pistons are vital articles under this category.

  • Pharmaceutical products -

    The Indian pharmaceutical products export to the US amounts to 3.47% of total exports to US.

  • Vehicles and parts -

    The Indian export of vehicles and parts (excluding railway) to the US grew from US$ 439 million in 2005 to US$ 487 million in 2006. Other important items under Indian Merchandise Exports to US are like fish and seafood like frozen shrimp, knotted and woven carpets and other textile floor coverings, household articles such as cast iron, tubes/pipes, and other iron and steel products.

    The Indian Merchandise Exports to US is facilitated by the inflow of Foreign Direct Investment, which had gone up from US$ 2.22 billion in 2003-04 to US$ 16 billion in 2006-07. The flow of Foreign Direct Investment into the sector of manufacturing and export of goods and services has contributed immensely to the export efforts of the country.
