The Himachal Pradesh Housing Board had been set up by the Himachal Pradesh state government in 2004, under the HP Housing and Urban Development Authority Act. Its main objective is to provide housing and accommodation to the needy inhabitants in the state.

In 2001-2002, the housing board in Himachal Pradesh built around 627 units of accommodation and spent ` 3352.10 lakh on schemes that are still under implementation. It has constructed around 8817 houses and developed around 1975 plots for various housing categories.

The objectives of the Himachal Pradesh Housing Board are enumerated as under:
  • To construct houses under different schemes, such as the schemes for social housing, rental housing, and self financing
  • To select the sites where housing projects are to be built and also decide the various facilities that are to be provided in the houses.
  • To construct houses for all the sections of the society – low, middle, and high income groups
  • To construct shops, commercial, and industrial complexes

The Himachal Pradesh Housing Board has several plans on the anvil for industries, commercial, and residential complexes. The board has also constructed a hotel called The Holiday home in Shimla. It has also constructed the complexes for HP Institute of Public Administration in Shimla, Solan, Mandi, Chamba, Kullu, and Nahan.
