Abstract:

FDI from Sweden to India has increased due to the presence of large number of Swedish companies in India like Oriflame, ABB, Alfa Laval, and Astra Pharma. Metallurgy, steel, drugs and pharmaceuticals are among the sectors that have benefited from FDI from Sweden.

Major Swedish investments in India:

The Swedish firm SKF has made an investment of around ` 1300 million in order to upgrade its factory in Pune and it has also opened a center for product development in India.

Further the Swedish company Electrolux has made an investment of ` 400 million in 2007 in order to set up a research center in India.

The Indian firm TATA Teleservices and the Swedish firm Ericsson have signed the contract for CDMA2000 1X expansion as a result of which Ericsson will lay out its AXE based MSCs all through out the TATA Teleservices's network of twelve new circles. The Swedish company Ericsson has also signed a three year contract with the Indian firm Bharti which is worth around US$ 400 million and involves optimizing and operating the network of Bharti. The Swedish firm Telelogic is planning to enlarge its operations in India by hiring more people in the country.

Inflow of FDI from Sweden to India:

The total flow of FDI from Sweden to India amounted to ` 12,880.0 million from 1991 to 2002. the amount of FDI from Sweden to India stood at ` 2104.8 million in 2003, in 2004 this figure increased to ` 3439.2 million, and in the next year this figure came to ` 1377.9 million. According to estimates of December 2005, Sweden ranks twelfth among the foreign countries investing in India.
