Tata Motors Ltd is the leader in the Commercial Vehicles segment and second largest in the passenger car market. In 1945 Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company Limited was established to manufacture locomotives and other engineering products. In 1954 it entered into collaboration with Daimler Benz AG Germany for the manufacture of Light Commercial Vehicles. The exports began in 1961 with first truck being shipped to Ceylon, now Sri Lanka. Manufacture of Commercial Vehicles began in 1983. In 1991, it launched the first indigenous passenger car, Tata Sierra.

   
It has since then launched new models in various segments that have been very successful. Over 3 million Tata vehicle ply on Indian roads since the first rolled out in 1954. India's first indigenous passenger car 'Indica' was launched in 1998, within 2 years of its launch; it became the largest selling car in its segment.

In 2005, Tata Motors created a new segment by launching Tata Ace, India's first indigenously developed mini-truck. Tata motors manufacturing units are located at Jamshedpur, Lucknow and Pimpri-Chinchwad (Pune). The Pune plant manufactures the passenger cars.
