About Pondicherry Milk Co Operatives
The Pondicherry Cooperative Milk Producers' Union is first among all the various dairy cooperatives in Pondicherry. This cooperative society saw its registration in 1955 as Pondicherry Cooperative Milk Supply society. However in 1973, the name was changed to milk producers union. This dairy was started with an initial capacity of 10,000 litres milk per day costing ` 23.00 lakhs.
The dairy cooperative society in Pondicherry has 101 allied milk cooperative societies. The Pondicherry Cooperative Milk Producers' Union receives milk supply from about 10, 000 cattle owners, who sought the membership of the Dairy Cooperative Societies at villages. These members are, in return, paid remunerative prices for the supply.
With passing time, the installed capacity of the cooperative society increased to 50,000 litres per day. However, efficient manpower in the top management level helped the dairy to reach 75,000 to 1,00,000 litres of milk production a day. The dairy specializes in the production of three types of milk including premium milk, standardized milk and toned milk to meet consumer demand.
The Primary Society tests the milk supplied by the individual members at the village level. The various categories of milk are sold at the Puducherry market under the brand name of "Ponlait" by the Pondicherry Cooperative Milk Producers' Union.
