Rajasthan Milk Cooperatives
Dairy has been a source of stable income in Rajasthan for years. As, unlike other parts of the country, there is hardly any source of income from crop production in Rajasthan, Dairy has played a major role in the economy of Rajasthan. It brings in cash on a daily basis and hence provides livelihoods and social security. Dairy has also been the source of liquidity and insurance against crop failure in Rajasthan. Farmers in Rajasthan realize 60%-70% of the consumer price from the dairy products. In such scenario, the importance of Rajasthan Milk Cooperatives can easily be understood. There are quite a few milk cooperatives in Rajasthan.
It's the Rajasthan Co-operative Dairy Federation Limited that organizes and administers most of the Rajasthan milk cooperatives. The Rajasthan milk cooperatives went through a tough phase during the 1990s when National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) had to play pivotal role in revitalizing the milk cooperatives in Rajasthan. NDDB, in consultation with the state and centre, formulates policies and strategies, which the cooperatives religiously follow. Rajasthan Co-operative Dairy Federation Limited (RCDF) also play major role in marketing the milk products in the state.
The Structure
The milk cooperatives in Rajasthan follow a three-tier structure. The farmer members, at the level one, own dairy cooperative societies (DCS). DCSs own district milk producer's union. At the top level, there is Rajasthan Co-operative Dairy Federation Limited (RCDF), collectively owned by the unions.

Federation:
Federation lies at the top level of the system, whose main responsibility is to provide service and support to the unions. Federation is also responsible for marketing of dairy products within and outside the state, communicating and relation building with government and NGO agencies as well as planning and mobilization of resources.
Union:
The main objective of union is to develop village milk cooperative network. It procures milk from DCS, processes those and markets the same. Promotion of fodder development and cross breeding through AI and NS are also done by Unions.
DCS:
DCS is responsible for providing input services like AH, AI etc. to its members. It also procures milk.
