An initiative from the prestigious Tata Group, one of the largest business houses in India, the Indian Hotels Company has 76 hotels, 7 palaces, 12 resorts & spas and 6 private islands spread over 52 destinations in 12 countries across 5 continents. Indian Hotels Company started its journey on December 16, 1903 when Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, the founder of the Taj Group, opened its first hotel, the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower in Mumbai. An incident of racial discrimination, where he was denied admission into the Watson's Hotel in Mumbai, made him determined to open the hotel. He went to London, D?sseldorf, Berlin and Paris to import best materials, furniture, interior artifacts and pieces of art for using in his hotel. It soon got huge popularity and became Mumbai's most iconic hotel.
