India and the U.S. have developed strong business relations with each other over the years. The United States has got great influence over Indian business. During 2018-19 U.S. is the fourth largest (US$ 3.14 billion) source of FDI in India.


The United States (US) is also the largest trading partner of the nation. It means the U.S. is the largest services export destination for India as well. In fact, American companies in India form the major part of the foreign companies operating in this country.

Why are American Companies in India?

The biggest reason is the high potential of Indian market and economy. Along with China, India is a fast-growing country that can make a difference to a majority of the companies' bottom lines. One can learn from a simple piece of statistics the reason why American companies are coming to India. The growth rate of GDP for the US was 2.3% in 2017. On the other hand, India is the fastest growing economy in the world, with the GDP growth rate of 6.6% in 2017, and expected growth rate of 7.5% in FY 2020 and FY 2021 (World Bank).

Besides, established big brands have already impregnated the U.S. and European markets. But the Indian market still offers a lot of scope and spaces for these to grow.

  India is also a large depository of skilled yet cheap labour. Hence, it becomes easy for the American companies to optimize their production in India.

American Companies Journey

The American companies in India started their dream run during 1990 when they reaped huge profits. The companies have seen double digit year-on-year growth in various sectors like Technology, Colas, Agriculture, Automobiles, Equipments, Finance and Banking. According to the American Chamber of Commerce in India, their membership base has soared up from zero in 1992 to more than 300 till date. However, the major success in terms of investment and growth came in technology sector. Many of the top IT companies in India are American. In fact, out of the top 20 IT companies operating in India, many are from the U.S., such as Cognizant, Microsoft, Google, Dell, SAP, Oracle, Cisco, Microsoft, HP and Intel.

However, the growth of the American companies in India is not limited to IT or manufacturing only. Many American companies have significant operations in India. The list includes names such as Amazon, Apple, Citibank, Coca Cola, and Ford. The American retail giant Walmart has also acquired 77% stake in the foremost Indian ecommerce company Flipkart, to become a key player in the Indian consumption sector.
