American Companies in India

India has had a strong business relationship with the US which has been growing for years. In 2026 the US is still one of the top investors in India. From recent reports the US is among top 5 sources of Foreign Direct Investment in India, also with total investments which have crossed US$ 60 billion over the years.

The US is also a large trade partner of India. In services we see that which go out of India, the US is a very large market, in sectors such as IT, consulting, and financial services. Also because of the strong tie between the two we see that US based companies make up a large component of foreign business present in India today.

Why are American Companies in India?

India has that which it does in great measure a large and growing market. With a population of over 1.4 billion we see annual increase in demand for products and services. This is a great opportunity for companies to see growth in their business.

The issue at hand is that of the large scale growth of the Indian market and economy. Along with China, India has also been a very fast growing large economy in the world which is still an attractive field for global companies which want to expand into new markets. Also which is true from recent economic reports.

The past few years have seen the U.S. GDP growth at a rate which has been between 2.0% to 2.5%. At the same time India has been growing at a much faster rate, in 2024 the country saw a growth rate of about 6.5% in GDP and that is also what is expected in 2025 and 2026 according to reports from the World Bank and IMF.

This steady growth which also sees large numbers of middle class consumers entering the market, makes India an attractive platform for American companies as a better alternative to many developed economies.

Journey of American Companies in India

American companies began their large scale entry into Indian market post 1991 economic reforms which saw the opening up of Indian markets to foreign players. Since then we have seen this companies do well across sectors like technology, beverages, agriculture, autos, equipment, finance and banking. Many companies have reported consistent growth over the years which has been supported by increasing demand and a growing consumer base in India.

According to the American Chamber of Commerce in India’s report which noted that in 1992 at the start they had zero members from the U.S. to report and by 2025-2026 that number had grown to over 400 companies, we see the growing interest of U.S. businesses in India. Also in terms of investment and growth the biggest achievement has been in the technology sector. It is the top tier IT companies that have seen the most action. In fact out of the lead players in the Indian tech space many of them are American. In fact what we see is a large presence of the leading global tech firms with major Indian operations which are from the U.S. like Cognizant, Microsoft, Google, Dell Technologies, Oracle, Cisco, HP Inc. and Intel which have large offices and development centers in India.

However we see that American companies’ growth in India is not limited to IT or manufacturing. Many American companies today have wide reach in many sectors in India. We see in this the large players like Amazon, Apple Inc., Citibank, Coca Cola and Ford Motor Company which also report to be still expanding in the area. Also we have the American retail giant Walmart which in 2018 bought into Flipkart with a 77% stake and which as we head to 2026 is still to play a key role in India’s very fast growing online retail market.
