Growth of Open Source software catalyzes the development of cloud computing

Cloud computing is fast gaining popularity as it lowers the cost of Open Source vendors who sell software-as-a-service (SaaS). This finding is revealed by the analyst firm Saugatuck.

It is estimated that the vendors are saving approximately 80% of total costs when compared to peer proprietary products. Cloud computing allows people to take advantage of storage, processing, and other web applications on a pay-per-use basis.

It is to be noted that any change effected in the Open Source code must be shared with other relevant community members. The code must be used with discretion in traditional licensed software models. The more prominent SaaS provider is the Amazon S3 online storage service.
