Hindustan Fertilizer Corporation Limited: Overview

Hindustan Fertilizer Corporation Limited started in the year 1978 under the authority of the Indian government. The government, in order to reorganize the Fertilizer Corporation of India, incorporated Hindustan Fertilizer Corporation Limited. Henceforth, many organizations came under the aegis of this public sector company. Some of them were:

• The production units at Barauni, Namrup, Durgapur, and Haldia
• The Eastern Marketing Zone
• The Purchase and Liaison Office in Calcutta
• The Agronomy Wing of FP and ARD at Sindri
• The Fertilizer Promotion and Agricultural Research Center

The production units of Hindustan Fertilizer Corporation Limited are well known for the production of Urea. The urea is distributed and promoted under the product brand name of Moti Urea. In total, the Namrup complex of Hindustan Fertilizer Corporation Limited has 3 plants under it out of which Namrup-II has not been functional since 1994 due to limitations of supply of natural gas. Ultimately in the year 1992, the Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction identified Hindustan Fertilizer Corporation Limited as a sick industry.

In 1995, the Indian government prepared a reorganization plan for reviving the sick Hindustan Fertilizer Corporation Limited and the requirement of new investment for the revival of the production units was estimated at ` 465 crore. But due to lack of funding, the revamping of the plants of Hindustan Fertilizer Corporation Limited at Gorakhpur and Haldia was not possible.

However, the Indian government has been undertaking a lot of new strategies to make these revival packages economically viable. For this purpose it has also been encouraging the participation of foreign investments in these rehabilitation schemes.
