Paradeep Phosphates Limited or PPL was established in the year 1981. Paradeep Phosphates Limited was a joint venture of the Government of India and the Republic of Nauru. This fertilizer manufacturing company became independent in 1993 and became a government of India Public Sector undertaking.

Paradeep Phosphates Limited started with latest fertilizer manufacturing technologies. It is located in the port town of Paradeep, approximately 120 km away from Bhubaneswar - the capital city of the Indian state Orissa. Paradeep Phosphates Limited produces and markets fertilizers, chemicals and their by-products. Paradeep Phosphates Limited is the largest DI-Ammonium Phosphate or DAP plant in Asia and its annual capacity of 720,000 MT.

The organization has incurred huge loss in recent years and was consequently declared sick unit. Its production was stopped. Further it was referred to the Disinvestment Commission in the year 1998. Furthermore, the Commission recommended for strategic sale of not less than 51%. The government of India, cabinet committee on disinvestment ordered for disinvestment of 74% equity sale. Today, M/S Zuari Industries Limited owns the enterprise and it is called as M/S Zuari Maroc Phosphates Private Limited. After the takeover of the erstwhile Paradeep Phosphates Limited by the M/S Zuari Industries Limited, the plant is now working at 110% capacity. The production of fertilizer by this plant has gone up from 20,000 metric tons to 70,000 metric tons in May-June 2002.

The company is planning for substantial increase of its capacity for its existing DAP plant. Moreover, it is also planning to double the existing production capacity of its Phosphoric Acid plant. Furthermore, it is diversifying into production of Ammonia Urea complex fertilizer with annual production capacity of 500,000 MT.
