Aluminium is a highly concentrated industry in India, where top few companies constitute the majority of the overall aluminium production of the country. There are a number of aluminium plants in India, majority of which are owned by the top players in Indian aluminium industry like HINDALCO, NALCO, BALCO, and MALCO etc.

Hindalco Aluminium Plants

Renukoot
Hindalco has its largest aluminium plant located in Renukoot in Uttar Pradesh. Commissioned in 1962, the Renukoot plant started its journey with one potline and a smelter (capacity of 20,000 tpa). Currently, this plant has a facility of 390,000 tpa aluminium smelter.

Hirakud
Hirakud plant is located on the bank of Hirakud Dam – the longest earthen dam in the world, 320 km away from Bhubaneswar in Orissa. Initially established by Indal in 1959, it's the second aluminium smelter in India operating on grid power. Currently Hirakud plant has the capacity of 156,000 tpa. Works are in progress to enhance the capacity of the plant.

Alupuram
This smelter of Hindalco, located in the Ernakulam district of the state of Kerala, was shut down a long time back. However, the extrusion unit in this plant is still running. It's the plant where aluminium ingot was produced for the first time in this country.

National Aluminium Company Ltd. (Nalco) Aluminium Plants

Angul
The Angul plant of National Aluminium Company Ltd. (Nalco) is located in the state of Orissa. Started its operation in early 1987, this smelter plant currently has the capacity of 345,000 tpa, which has recently been augmented from its previous capacity of 230,000 tpa.

Bharat Aluminium Company Ltd. (Balco) Aluminium Plants

Korba
The Korba plant of Bharat Aluminium Company Ltd. (Balco) is set to be the largest aluminium plant in the world with a capacity of 1 million tpa from a single location. Located in Chhattisgarh, this plant currently has a capacity of 350,000 tpa, which has recently been augmented from the previous capacity of 135,000 tpa. However, according to the MoU between Balco and Government of Chhattisgarh, the capacity of the plant would be augmented to 1,000,000 tpa with an investment of ` 8,100 crore.

Madras Aluminium Company Ltd (Malco) Aluminium Plant

Mettur
The Mettur plant of the Madras Aluminium Company Ltd (Malco) is located at the Mettur Dam complex in the state of Tamil Nadu. It has a current smelter capacity of 40,000 tpa.
