Himachal Pradesh Sugar Industry is small in comparison to the sugar industry in the other states. The Sugar Industry in Himachal Pradesh is not that big due to the fact that the climate in Himachal Pradesh is not very suitable for the cultivation of sugarcane.
The Sugar Industry in Himachal Pradesh has flourished in the last few years due to the efforts that have been taken by the state government. The various benefits of the Himachal Pradesh Sugar Industry are that it has helped in the development of the state, especially of the rural areas by mobilizing the rural resources. It has also benefited the state by generating employment, transport, and communication facilities. The locations of the sugar mills of Himachal Pradesh Sugar Industry are Una and Ponta Sahib. The major sugar mills of Himachal Pradesh Sugar Industry are:
Himachal Pradesh Sugar Industry can be classified into 2 groups that are the organized sector which consists of the sugar factories and the unorganized sector which comprises of the producers of the traditional sweeteners like gur and khandsari. These are consumed mainly by the rural population as sweeteners and also as important source for nutrition. The production of khandsari and gur are considered to be part of the village industry and are manufactured in huge quantities.
The state government in order to boost the Sugar Industry in Himachal Pradesh has declared it as a thrust industry for the state. The government of the state has also approved the setting up of a sugar mill in Una which will be called the Mapex Sugar Mill with an investment of around ` 650 crore. The sugarcane crushing capacity of this mill would be 11000 TCD and it would provide employment to more than 6000 persons.
Himachal Pradesh Sugar Industry has helped in the development of the state. As the state government is taking more efforts to boost the Sugar Industry in Himachal Pradesh, it is sure to expand exponentially in the years to come.
