Tata Telecommunications to Launch Large WiMax Network in India

Tata Communications, the giant telecommunications company of India has recently announced is planning to launch the WiMax technology application. WiMax technology provides wireless hi-speed broad band services for portable communicating devices like laptop, PDA, Mobile phone etc. WiMax technology is far more superior to its predecessor, the WiFi technology. WiMax technology covers more area and has wider bandwidth. Further, its portability is another important factor. It can be easily activated and can also be used as an alternative to the wired broadband connections. Further, the installation process of WiMax does not require visibility range of the base station. It automatically connects with the nearest base station. To capitalize on these factors the giant Indian telecommunication company, Tata Communications have forayed into the WiMax business.

   
Tata Telecommunications is slated to invest around US $ 500 million in wireless broadband on the WiMax technology in collaboration with United States-based Telsima Corporation. The US-based Telsima Corporation will provide necessary infrastructural and equipment support for the project to Tata Telecommunications. This US-based communication company is a pioneer and leading Mobile WiMax and WiMax certified Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) solutions provider. The company has a rare distinction of having supplied the largest WiMax certified deployments in the world. It has more than10000 base station sectors and 100,000 modems operated by Tier 1 telecommunication operators in countries like India, Russia, Africa and some countries of Eastern Europe. The company has cut a niche for itself in offering high end innovative technologies and has won many awards. It is well known for providing technologies, which offer economic advantages, new business models and more capital efficient networks.

With this launch, Tata Telecommunications would become the first Indian telecommunication company to launch high speed broad band Internet services on WiMax platform in India. This WiMax connection would be provided to the general retail consumers of India, which would facilitate services covering areas like video, education, music, business services and other value added services. Initially, Tata Telecommunications plans to offer this service to major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Cochin and Chandigarh. The President of Tata Communications Retail Business Unit, Mr. Shankar Prasad said that the company plans to extend WiMax services to at least 15 Indian cities by the end of the year 2008. Further, it also plans to add 200,000 retail WiMax subscribers by the end of March 2009.
