Yahoo Inc. opened its new lab in Bangalore on 5th March, 2008. The New Lab that has been opened in Bangalore by Yahoo Inc. is the company's first lab in Asia and sixth in the world. In 2000, Yahoo India, the Indian subsidiary of Yahoo was established. Yahoo India provides technological tools, marketing solutions and internet services in the country.

   
Yahoo Inc., by opening its New Lab in Bangalore, has extended its research and development (R&D) operations to India. The New Lab of Yahoo Inc. in Bangalore would be involved in developing generation next products for the company's users and customers that are spread all over the world. To start with, it would have a team of around 100 members which would consist of engineers, micro- economists, computational scientists and sociologists.

The team of the new lab opened in Bangalore by Yahoo Inc. would work on projects that would help to make the web more simple and applicable for advertisers and users that are spread all across the world. The main focus of the new lab that has been opened by Yahoo Inc. in Bangalore would be development of software for multimedia, extraction of information, query processing and machine learning. The new lab opened in Bangalore by Yahoo Inc. would also be involved in the development of products for search based on index, database and matching content for advertisers and users.

The new lab opened in Bangalore by Yahoo Inc. would work together with the company's other labs to derive new algorithms. This would help the company to improve the performance of its retrieval tools and search. The other five labs of Yahoo are located in Barcelona (Spain), Santiago (Chile), New York (US), Burbank (US), and Silicon Valley (US). The head and Vice- President of the new lab that has been opened in Bangalore by Yahoo Inc., is Dr Rajeev Rastogi.

Yahoo India sacked around forty employees in February, 2008. This was done by the company in order to retain the best people and also to optimize its pool of resource. Yahoo India has employed about 1,500 people in the country, as in March, 2008. The company's operations in the country are growing at the rate of 50%. Yahoo India plans to hire more than 2,000 people by the end of 2008. The company is looking for talented people beyond the fields of engineering and science in order to add value to its creative output. Yahoo India also holds a series of public lectures that are held on quarterly basis on topics such as Internet, science and technology. The company, by holding these lectures brings together industry, scientists, media and academicians.
