Indian Hotels Co. and its subsidiary companies are jointly known as Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces, which is famous as one of the finest and largest hotel companies in Asia. The Indian Hotels Co. Ltd was established by the Tata Group and in 1903 the company opened its first hotel - the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai.

The Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces has around 56 hotels across in 39 destinations in India. It also has 18 hotels in foreign destinations which include places such as Malaysia, Maldives, Seychelles, Mauritius, USA, UK, Africa, and Australia. In the Company Indian Hotels, the Tata Group has a stake of around 29.28%. In order to have consistency across the various categories of hotels, Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces is divided into business, luxury, and leisure categories.

Indian Hotels Co. runs Taj Air, which is a private luxury jet and 2 luxury yachts in Kochi and Mumbai. The Indian Hotels Co. Ltd. also operates the Taj Sats Air Catering in collaboration with Singapore Airport Terminal Services, to form the largest catering airline service in the South Asia region. The total income of Indian Hotels Co. amounted to ` 2,700 million in 2005-2006, which shot up to ` 3,644 million the next year.

The net profit of the Indian Hotels Co. amounted to ` 385 million in 2005-2006 and increased to ` 547.6 million in 2006-07. This shows that the business of Indian Hotels Co. is increasing with each passing year. The Indian Hotels Co. Ltd. has planned to increase the number of rooms it offers in each of its hotels and plans to invest as much as ` 12 billion towards this. It is also planning to takeover more hotels abroad as well as in India.
