The BMW AG, officially Bayerische Motoren Werke AG or Bavarian Motor Works (BMW), was established in 1916 and is a German automobile manufacturing company. Based in Munich, Bavaria,
Germany, BMW manufactures A-Class luxury cars and motorbikes. Karl Rapp, a German engine maker, set up the Rapp-Motoren Werke for manufacturing aircraft engines. Later two Austrians, Max Friz and Franz Josef Popp with the financial backing of Camillo Castiglioni took over the Rapp-Motorenwerke and renamed it as the Bayerische Motoren Werke or BMW. The BMW logo was inspired by the rotating propeller of the aeroplane engine.

The name is a class in itself. The BMW is considered as one of the greatest car manufacturers in the history of the automobile industry. The BMW AG is also the parent manufacturer of the Rolls Royce Motor Cars and owns Mini as well. The brand name given to the motorbikes produced by the company is BMW Motorrad. BMW finds a place amongst the top three luxury car manufacturers in the world. The other two are the Mercedes-Benz and Audi AG. The BMW product lineup is named as 'Series' and is placed with a single-digit number representing a particular model and its variants. In the year 2004, the BMW decided to place odd-numbered series for its saloon, sedan, and estate touring models and placed the even-numbered series for its double-door coupes and cabriolets.
