Laloo Prasad Yadav, the Railways Minister of India, presented the last budget of his current five year tenure in the Lok Sabha today, 26th February, 2008. The railway budget contains a bucket of benefits for the "Aam Aadmi" (common man). Second class fares have been slashed by 5%. Benefits for the Passengers in the Indian Railway Budget, 2008 include 4% reduction in the fares of AC 2nd class, 3% reduction in the fares of AC 3- tier and 7% reduction in the fares of AC1st class.

The Indian Railway Budget, 2008 has further given various benefits to the passengers like fifty three new trains will be started in 2008- 2009. Ten new Garib Raths will also be introduced in the same year which would be fully air- conditioned, low cost trains.

Moreover senior citizens will be given a concession of around 30% in fares. AIDS patients will receive a concession of 50% in fares. Further, the benefits for the passengers in the Indian Railway Budget, 2008 include ` 4000 crores that have been allotted for the installation of green toilets in trains. Railway information system will be improved in order to benefit the passengers.

The Railway Budget of India, 2008 has given special benefits to the women and students passengers such as free season monthly tickets for boy students up to class 12 and for girl students up to the level of graduation. Senior women citizens (beyond 60 years of age) will receive as much as 50% concession on railway fares. Among the new trains, a Mother-Child Health Express has been proposed through the joint collaboration of Indian Railways and Rajiv Gandhi Foundation. Rajdhani and Satabdi express will have new, modernized coaches. Moreover housekeeping in Rajdhani and Satabdi express will be outsourced to private agencies.
