Gujarat Industrial Power Co. was set up under the guidance of the government of Gujarat as a public limited company in 1985.

Gujarat Industrial Power Co. Ltd (GIPCL) has been promoted by the Gujarat State Fertilizers & Chemicals Limited (GSFC), Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL), Petrofils Co- operatives Ltd, and Gujarat Alkalies & Chemicals Ltd. (GACL). The Industrial Power Co. Ltd. of Gujarat has its registered office in Vadodara, Gujarat.

The business of the Gujarat Industrial Power Co. is to generate electrical power. In 1992, the first project of power generation had been commissioned by the Gujarat Industries Power Company Ltd. at Vadodara. This power generation project had a plant which was based on the power of combined cycle and had a capacity of 145 MW. The power generated from this plant was distributed on the basis of the equity holding of the promoters of the company.

In November, 1997 the Gujarat Industrial Power Co. expanded its production capacity by commissioning a 160 MW power plant based on Naphtha & Gas combined cycle at Vadodara. In November, 1999 it further expanded its production capacity by 250 MW by commissioning a power plant based on Lignite. The Gujarat Power Industrial Co. Ltd has obtained the Quality Management System (QMS) Certificate under ISO 9001: 2000. This achievement shows the level of commitment that Gujarat Industrial Power Co. had for generating electrical power according to international quality standards, thereby ensuring satisfaction of the customers.
