Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) was founded on 2nd October, 1961 by the amalgamation of Western Shipping Corporation and Eastern Shipping Corporation. Often referred to as a giant player in shipping services, SCI has 83 ships of 4.6 million DWT.

SCI operates in areas of management of large number of vessels on behalf of various Government Departments and Organizations, crude oil supply, international container service, offshore service, break-bulk service, liquid/dry bulk service, and passenger service. The corporation is well equipped with experienced and trained workforce at that are efficient at both afloat and ashore operations.

The following is a brief description of the various divisional activities of Shipping Corporation of India:
  • Bulk-carrier and tanker division : SCI transports bulk commodities such as steel, coal, fertilizers, and iron ore through bulk carriers. The bulk commodity transportation is the key factor contributing towards the international bulk trade. Crude oil tankers facilitate supply of imported crude oil. The Corporation also provides logistic solutions to the needs of the Indian Oil Industry.

  • Apart from the two kinds of vessels mentioned above, SCI has deployed Specialized Vessels for transport services of Ammonia, LPG, and Phosphoric acid. SCI is the first Indian shipping company to import LNG tankers.

  • Liner and passenger Services : The mainstay of the EXIM trade in India, SCI Liner services have reached out to India's major trading partners. As a matter of fact, the Shipping Corporation of India is the only Indian Shipping company operating Liner services. SCI Global liner services extend to Canada, South Africa, UK, USA East, Far East Japan, Black and Mediterranean Sea Ports.

  • Passenger Vessels operated by SCI belong to Government bodies like Department of Ocean Development, Geological Survey of India, Lakshadweep, and Andaman and Nicobar Island Administrations.

  • Technical and offshore services : The technical division is responsible for acquiring new building and second hand vehicles. The fleet services of the technical department increases the performance of ships. Offshore services provide logistic solutions to the Indian offshore oil industry. As part of its constructive activities, the SCI vessels facilitate rescue work and fire fighting as well.

  • Maritime Training Institute : An ISO 9001:2000 certified institute also a branch of World Maritime University as well as a TrainMar Center for UNCTAD. SCI has been effectively training and retraining its manpower.
Major contracts signed by Shipping Corporation of India are as follows:
  • 27th October 2006 : With Shipbuilding Co.Ltd (South Korea) for delivering 6 Newbuilding LR-I Product Tankers.

  • 14th November 2006 : With Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (South Korea) for building and delivering two 4,400 TEU Container Vessels.
Shipping Corporation of India has made its presence felt while keeping in mind the safety of the environment and the judicious opportunities available. In a nutshell, it has made a mammoth contribution in the field of Maritime transportation and building services.
