What is E-Commerce?

E-Commerce, i.e. electronic commerce, means transactions (sales and purchases) of goods or services over the Internet without an intermediary service. The Internet has created a new economic system, i.e. "Internet Marketplace", and it has become the virtual main market of the world. Providing a quick and convenient way of exchanging goods and services regionally as well as globally, online shopping is gaining a lot of popularity.

The Indian retail industry is valued at US$600 billion, 19 percent of which is constituted by the organised retail sector. The retail sector is expected to reach the US$1 trillion mark by 2020. The 'Retail 2020: Retrospect, Reinvent, Rewrite by Boston Consulting Group and Retailers Association of India' report maintains that the Indian retail industry is set to grow at 12 percent annually.

Online shopping has left behind the traditional brick and mortar establishments and mom-and-pop stores. Let's face it; it's just easier to shop online if you have a computer, an Internet connection and a desire to avoid crowds. You can sit there with a mug of coffee and shop for your family.
