Top DTH brands in India

DTH or Direct to Home service refers to a special kind of service related to digital satellite, which provides direct television programming to a subscriber's house irrespective of its location within the country. With wireless technology, different television programs directly get transmitted from satellite to a person's television who has subscribed to this service through satellite signals. Being wireless, it does not even include any cable or wiring usage. People's nature of leading a hassle-free as well as quality life has contributed to the increasing demand for DTH services since it gives good picture clarity and sound quality along with wireless and several other special features.

DTH service mainly consists of satellites, broadcasting centres, encoders, receivers, multiplexers etc. The Direct to Home service providers need to have rental satellite Ku-band transponders. The subscriber needs to install a Set-Top Box and a Dish Antenna that decodes and converts the signal received from the satellite to data, audio and video signals.

As reported by TRAI the Indian Telecom Services Performance Indicators report for the October December 2025 quarter notes that we have see an 18.3% drop in the total active pay DTH subscriber base which went down to about 50.99 million from 52.78 million in the September 2025 quarter. Also we are looking at a trend of continuous decline in subscribers. Also in March 2025 which was the January-March 2025 quarter the total was around 56.92 million which indicates that the DTH sector has experienced a steady loss of customers as more people shift to online streaming. India’s pay TV industry is reporting slow growth and in some cases decline which was not what early reports had predicted. We saw steady growth reported in past but recent data indicates that the DTH segment is under pressure from OTT platforms and also due to change in viewing habits. By 2025-2026 we see the total pay DTH subscriber base reduced from about 69 million in 2021 to almost 51 million in 2025 which is a very clear indicator of declining demand. Also at the same time it is to be noted that India still has a large TV market of over 230 million TV homes and 900 million viewers which means traditional TV is still a key player although its growth is slow.

According to reports by Media Partners Asia (MPA) the Indian pay TV and DTH sector is in a stage of slow growth and pressure as we see it is no longer in a strong expansion phase. While in the past we had see growth supported by elements like TRAI’s which introduced flexible channel selection and improved service structures, that is not the case today. Also what we are seeing is a very rapid growth in OTT play and an increase in high speed broadband which in turn is reducing the traditional DTH play. In urban areas we are seeing many of the premium users shift towards IPTV and streaming which has a wider choice of content and convenience. At the same time DTH services still retain their importance in rural and semi urban areas which have limited internet access. Looking ahead the sector is expected to be stable but at the same time will have to deal with issues of changing viewer habits and digital competition.

List of Top DTH brands in India

Tata Sky (Earlier Tata Sky) :

Tata Play which began in 2006 as Tata Sky out of a collaboration between Tata Group and Star (which is now a part of The Walt Disney Company). At time of launch the service came with 100 to 120 channels which primarily were of Hindi entertainment, movies, sports and some regional options. It grew to popularity because of its great picture quality and easy set up.

In the 2025-2026, Tata Play is to put out over 600 channels and services which will include HD and some 4K content. We also see that they are to roll out advanced set top boxes with recording features which will allow users to pause and save live TV. Also they are to present bundled plans which include OTT apps thus making the service more relevant for today’s users. Also known for excellent customer care, stable signal and easy recharge options which position it as a leading DTH player in India.

Airtel Digital TV:

In 2008 Bharti Airtel put out Airtel Digital TV. At the time of launch the service had a choice of 120 to 150 channels which included national and regional content. What made the service stand out at launch was its large channel selection and excellent network coverage in India.

As of 2026 Airtel Digital TV will be offering over 550 channels which include HD and on demand content. We also report that they have put in an Android based set top box which is a key feature of the service; this allows what we may term a one stop shop for customers to enjoy TV channels as well as OTT apps. Also customers are able to handle their subscription issues through the Airtel mobile app. What Airtel is known for is flexible plans, great picture quality and also very strong network performance which we see to be especially true in urban areas.

Sun Direct:

Sun Direct went live in 2007 and we saw it mostly in South Indian markets. At the time of its launch it had a collection of 70 to 100 channels which largely were in regional languages like Tamil and Telugu.

In the 2025-2026, Sun Direct is to put forth a range of over 400 channels which will include a large selection of South Indian content. We see that they are into HD channels and also are to present simple set top box options. What Sun Direct is known for is their economic plans and extensive regional coverage which we will see to play out in states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. Also in the South Indian market they are to be noted as one of the most popular DTH services.

Dish TV:

Dish TV began operations in 2004 and was the first DTH service provider in India. At that point we saw that they had put out 50 to 70 channels which may have been a small number but was a great step forward as compared to what we had with cable TV. They played a key role in introducing satellite TV to Indian homes.

In 2026 Dish TV which had over 500 channels including HD, regional and movie channels also had the news of it’s merger with d2h which only served to strengthen its service network. Also they made available set top boxes with HD support and basic recording features, also they have made available their OTT platform. Also it is in the rural and semi urban areas where we see large use of Dish TV because of their low cost plans and wide availability.

DD Free Dish:

In 2004 Doordarshan put out DD Free Dish which at launch had a set of 30 to 40 free channels which were mostly government and public channels.

As of 2026 DD Free Dish reports to have over 350-400 free channels. We do not report on any monthly subscription which is what makes it very popular in rural areas. All that users have to do is install a dish and a compatible set top box. The service mostly features news, entertainment, devotional, and regional channels. It is known to be totally free of charge and very easy to use which in turn makes it a great choice for low budget households.

Reliance Big TV (Later Reliance Digital TV)

Reliance introduced Big TV in 2008 which at the time of launch had a choice of 90 to 120 channels which they put into categories of basic entertainment, movies, news and regional content. Also at launch the service came in at very attractive price points which in combination with the Reliance brand name got the attention of the public.

In the coming years the service which was renamed Reliance Digital TV and we saw it expand to over 500 channels which included HD channels. Also they put out interactive services and better set top boxes. But from 2017-2018, the company began to have financial issues which was a result of what was going on at Reliance Communications.

By the 2020s the service was mostly out of use and we saw little to no new customers. In 2026, what we see is Reliance Digital TV had lost their position as a leading brand in the Indian DTH sector.

Conclusion

In India DTH services have seen a large transformation over the years. In the early 2000’s we had limited channel options but now companies are offering hundreds of them. We also have modern features like HD, recording and OTT access.

In the year 2026 it is seen that while online streaming is on the rise, DTH services are still very much in use in India which we see in areas which have poor internet access. Also at that time players like Tata Play, Airtel Digital TV, and Dish TV are serving millions of users with what is reported to be very reliable TV services.
