Syndicate Bank

Syndicate Bank which was a known name in the public sector banks of India. In 1925 it was founded in Udupi, Karnataka with a basic aim to see that people saved money and had easy access to bank services which at that time was a luxury in small towns and rural areas.

For long that bank was a key player in financial inclusion. They also ran a very successful Pigmy Deposit Scheme which saw people save a little every day. This made the bank an accessible option for people with low income.

In 2020 we saw a different turn of events. Syndicate Bank merged with Canara Bank as a part of Government of India’s plan to see public sector banks’ growth and success. Also in 2026 it is noted that Syndicate Bank is no longer a standalone entity. Its services, branches and accounts are now a part of Canara Bank.

What Happened After the Merger

After the merger it was smooth for Syndicate Bank customers to transfer to Canara Bank. We didn’t see customers open new accounts or report to complex processes. Their accounts which they had before worked just the same and most services which they were using kept on to function without issues. Thus the transition we saw was very simple and stress free for account holders.

At the same time all of Syndicate Bank’s former branches have come over to Canara Bank. Customers may have gone to the same branches as before but what they got was a much larger branch and ATMs network across the country. We saw a greater reach which in turn made banking more convenient for people who travel or live in different cities.

Another big improvement we saw was in digital banking. Post merger customers began to use improved mobile and internet banking services from Canara Bank. We saw that transactions which included balance check, money transfer, bill payment, and account management became faster and easier. Also these changes have made daily banking simpler and more reliable for customers.

Services Earlier Offered by Syndicate Bank

Before the merger, Syndicate Bank offered a wide range of services for individuals, farmers, and businesses. These services are still available today through Canara Bank.

Deposit Services

The bank provided savings accounts, current accounts, fixed deposits, and recurring deposits. These were easy and for everyday use.

The Pigmy Savings Plan was a big hit. It had people depositing small sums regularly which in turn grew over time. This concept is still brought up as the bank’s greatest achievement.

Loan Services

Syndicate Bank offers a variety of loans. Home loans available for the purchase, construction or renovation of homes. For personal loans we saw options for weddings, travel, medical emergencies. Also we had the choice of car and two wheeler loans.

Education loans available for students who went to study in India or abroad. They covered fees, books and other expenses.

Agricultural and Rural Banking

The bank put great emphasis on serving rural communities. They provided loans for agriculture, irrigation and animal care. Farmers had access to special programs and credit cards.

These services improved agriculture and supported rural income. To this day Canara Bank is into the same farm services.

Business and Priority Sector Services

Syndicate Bank also supported small businesses and self employed persons. They provided loans for new business starts and growth.

Special programs they had for rural tourism, small shops, and local industries. We saw these as a way to stimulate job growth and local development.

Digital and Other Banking Services

The bank provided ATM, Internet, and fund transfer services. We see that customers use these to pay bills, book tickets, and send money online. Money transfer and international remittance options also available. Also which made banking more convenient.

Syndicate Bank Home Loan (Now Under Canara Bank)

Home loan services which we used to know as “SyndNivas” are now managed by Canara Bank. Customers may still apply for home loans with the same great benefits.

Loans available for that new home purchase, home construction, or renovation of your present home. Also we have the salaried and self employed apply. Repayment terms are flexible also as well as the amount which is lent out based on income and eligibility.

NRIs may also get home loans to buy property in India.

Digital Banking in 2026

After the restructure which is the merger, we see that customers are now using Canara Bank’s digital platforms which are their mobile and internet banking apps.

Users can see their balance, send money, pay bills, and manage accounts online. Also they support UPI payments which makes daily transactions a quick and easy process.

Security measures have also seen to increase which in turn is better for customer data safety.
