Axis Bank, previously known as UTI Bank, is one of the Big Four Banks of India along with State Bank of India, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank. Established in 1994, it's the first of the new private sector banks in India to start its operations, when Government of India opened the gate for the private banks to flock into the Indian financial market. Though the bank started its operation with the name UTI Bank, but later, in order to avoid ambiguities and confusion with other discrete entities carrying the same name, it changed its name to its current form (Axis Bank) in April 2007.

Axis Bank Limited recorded a total income of ` 13,745.04 crore as on the year ended March 31, 2009. It also made a net profit of ` 1,812.93 crore in the same financial year.
