BDO and Derivatives
BDO and derivatives are an important constituent of theIndian petrochemical industry. Being a chemical intermediate, BDO and derivatives are processed further in order to get chemicals of various kinds. The industry of BDO and derivatives is a sector which is growing fast. It is an industry which is highly organized for there are only a handful of companies.
The BDO and derivative's industry requires a lot of capital investment for it is a highly technology driven industry. The price of BDO and derivatives is highly volatile for it is dependent totally on the international market. As a result of this, the producers have to match their prices with the international market even when it is not economically justifiable.
The various kinds of BDO and its derivatives are:
- Butanediol
- Tetrahydrofuran (THF)
- Gammabutyrolactone (GBL)
- N- ethylpyrrolidone (NEP)
- Methylpyrrolidone (NMP)
A byproduct of BDO and derivatives, tetrahydrofuran is a solvent and is used in the manufacture of printing ink, adhesives, unvulcanized rubber, and lacquers. It is also used as an intermediate chemical in the production of butyrolactone, adipic acid, polytetramethylene glycol, and succinic acid.
Gammabutyrolactone, a BDO and derivative byproduct is a industrial chemical which is widely used. It have solvent qualities which is excellent and also have low levels of toxicity which helps in diminishing environmental concerns. Gammabutyrolactone is used in the manufacture of beverage filtration, purification aids, and hospital supplies. It is largely used as an intermediate by the industrial companies for the production of other chemicals.
Another byproduct of BDO and derivatives is methylpyrrolidone. It is a solvent and is used in the manufacture of plastics, cleansers, paint strippers, surface coatings, electronic equipment, and plant protection.
The BDO and derivatives industry has grown but even then there is room for more development. That the sale of BDO and derivatives reaches its heights efforts must be taken by the petrochemical industry ofIndia and the government ofIndia.
